Actuarial Science

Prepare for a career in actuarial science with this 18-credit undergraduate Certificate in Actuarial Science. As a student, you will take finance and economics courses in the School of Business. You will also take math courses in the School of Science and Engineering.

What is Actuarial Science?

Actuarial science uses mathematics and financial theories to quantify, manage, and mitigate risk. Actuaries use probability and statistics to help individuals and companies avoid financial loss. 

Actuaries earn high salaries and specialize in these areas:

  • Corporate Finance and Enterprise Risk Management (ERM)
  • Government and Consulting
  • Life and Health Insurance
  • Property and Casualty (P&C)
  • Pensions and Retirement 

Preliminary Actuarial Exams Readiness

To become a certified actuary, you must pass a series of rigorous exams. If you follow the recommended course sequence, you can take the preliminary exams before graduation.

  • During the spring or summer of your sophomore year, you can take Exam P鈥揚robability.
  • During the summer of your junior year, you can take Exam FM鈥揊inancial Mathematics.

Validation by Educational Experience (VEE)

As a student, you will also take at least three (3) courses that count towards the Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) requirements. VEE requirements are mandatory coursework on key topics. They are not formally tested but are still required by the
