Research Opportunities

As a student in the program, you’ll have opportunities to participate in faculty-led research that applies computer science to real-world challenges in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software systems and computational analysis.

You can investigate authorship attribution, computational linguistics and machine learning with Dr. Patrick Juola, whose research explores how computational analysis can identify the authors of disputed texts. You may study how algorithms compare writing styles, analyze linguistic patterns and support applications in digital humanities, cybersecurity and forensic investigations.
If you’re interested in applications of machine learning, the Ong lab explores traditional supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning and LLMs and transformer models in subfields like intelligent tutoring systems, natural language processing, computer vision and synthetic dataset generation. Projects are focused on the educational domain, but Dr. Ong has done projects in cancer detection and generation, image understanding, topic modeling and concept extraction as well. The lab also has a continued interest in theoretical computer science, combinatorics and behavior modeling via Markov and related models.
Investigate resilient cyber-physical systems through research in the Romagnoli Lab, combining computer science, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence and control systems engineering. Research areas include cybersecurity for cyber-physical systems, software rejuvenation, scientific machine learning, networked and distributed control, intelligent robotics and modeling of complex biological and engineering systems. You can work on both simulated environments and real-world experimental platforms, including autonomous drones, inverted pendulum systems and embedded robotic systems. Research projects focus on computational approaches for improving the safety, reliability and autonomy of systems used in transportation, healthcare, energy and autonomous platforms. The research emphasizes the integration of algorithms, machine learning, mathematical modeling, real-time computing and networked control to address real-world challenges in modern intelligent systems.

Your Summer Path to Research

Each summer, you can take part in 91ÖÆÆ¬³§'s 10-week Undergraduate Research Program (URP), where you'll conduct hands-on research on funded projects supported by government agencies, non-profit organizations and corporate foundations. These projects often extend beyond campus to include partnerships with experts from major research institutions and industry.
